Paul Perille

PaulIn his role as senior caucus aide, Paul's primary responsibility is analyzing legislation in order to provide strategic and tactical guidance to the Majority Leader and all ten members of the Democratic Caucus.

Since coming to the Legislature in 2004, Paul has served under two previous Democratic leaders, former Legislative Minority Leader (now Brookhaven Town Supervisor) Brian X. Foley and former Minority Leader (now Presiding Officer of the Legislature) Legislator William J. Lindsay. Working with Foley in 2004, Paul was recognized by public health advocates and lawmakers on both sides of the aisle as being instrumental in securing passage of Tobacco 19. The law puts Suffolk County in company with only three other states who seek to keep cigarettes out of schools by raising the purchase age of all tobacco products to nineteen. Tobacco 19 is the only anti-smoking measure in the history of the County Legislature to be approved unanimously.

Since Democrats won a majority in the Legislature in November 2005, Paul now serves at the pleasure of Majority Leader Jon Cooper. In January 2006, Legislator Cooper was selected by his caucus to be the first Democratic Majority Leader in the history of the Suffolk County Legislature.

Paul was born and raised across the Sound in Bridgeport Connecticut. Prior to coming to the Legislature, he has had a diverse and rewarding career in professional politics and journalism. Paul has served a communications operative to campaigns in Virginia, Louisiana and the District of Columbia.

In 1994, he covered the landmark Republican take over of Congress for Campaigns & Elections magazine. Just prior to coming to the Legislature, Paul was the Senior News Writer and Political Columnist for the Long Island Press. While writing news stories and his column (Paul-itics) about local, state and national politics for the paper, Paul's skills with the pen were recognized by his peers. He is the recipient of two Long Island Coalition for Fair Broadcasting FOLIO Awards and several Press Club of Long Island honors. Prior to writing for the Press, he was the Executive Producer of the Alan Colmes Show, which aired on the great but now gone New York City talk radio station WEVD.

Paul holds a Masters Degree in Political Communications from the Graduate School of Political Management at the George Washington University. He is an accomplished cook, sculptor, an avid student of early American history and a voracious bibliophile. Paul lives by the water in Huntington with his wife Debra and daughter Samantha.
